Spike in beach rescues across vicinities as death toll continues to climb

A new wave of beach rescues has seen hundreds of people pulled from the water by sharks, dolphins and porpoises.
At least 33 people have been rescued after a man was hit by one of the sharks during a trip to the Gold Coast this week.
There are also fears the numbers could rise again after another person was attacked by one of the shark-worshipping marine beasts during a weeklong tourist excursion in Sydney this week.
Australian Marine Parks Minister Peter Whish-Wilson says rescues are "much more common" now and he says those that have been seen are very lucky to be alive.
"Our initial observations show that many of those who are in the sea at the moment have been very lucky to be saved," he said.
"And a lot of them are very happy to be in the sea.
"We are fortunate to have good communications with the authorities, and we expect to hear more from them over the next few days.
"It will be difficult and dangerous to see for some of those who are in the water."
While many are still in the water, more than 100 people have been rescued this week and it is estimated more than 2,000 have been helped to safety since the beginning of the year.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the Government's own safety response to disasters should be better than it is.
"When we look at the numbers, it is incredible how many people have been rescued this week, and some who are in the water, the vast majority of them are very lucky," he said.
He said the numbers are similar to this time in 2013 when 1,500 people were rescued.
"In all sorts of disasters like the one we've had, when it doesn't happen like that, the Government should have a better plan and better response than it did then."
Mr Whish-Wilson says it is a serious challenge that police and emergency workers have to face on a daily basis.
"If you want to save someone you've got to do something and it is in my opinion quite difficult because there is no real method to do that," he said.
He says a good response has increased in recent days because of a "really good weather window."
"We do have one great shark incident a month now and that's a good thing," he said.

According to Reuters, nine Palestinians were injured when rockets fired from Palestinian territory fell in Gaza City on Tuesday night.
The UN says it is witnessing the largest spike in rocket fire since the end of last summer, and hundreds of homes have been destroyed in what it has described as a "genocide".
Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Kidra said a UN school at Jabalia had been shelled but the UN was still trying to determine the source.
The UN is worried over the increasing death toll due to the continuing Israeli offensive against Hamas in Gaza. It says the Gaza conflict has killed some 1,800 Palestinians in less than a month, and over 1,250 Israelis as a result.
More than 9,000 Palestinians, the vast majority civilians, are in need of humanitarian aid.
